Mayor Roundtable on Infrastructure: Local Priorities in Rural Communities

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, MP Lockhart, and MP Ludwig meet with the Mayors of Fundy Royal and New Brunswick Southwest to listen to local infrastructure priorities.

August 14, 2018            Sussex, New Brunswick

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; Alaina Lockhart, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal; Karen Ludwig, Member of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest; and the Mayors of Fundy Royal and New Brunswick Southwest met for a Mayors Roundtable to discuss local infrastructure priorities in Southern New Brunswick rural municipalities.

Local MPs welcomed the opportunity to introduce local Mayors to Canada’s new Infrastructure and Communities Minister.  Today was an excellent opportunity to gather local perspectives from municipal leaders on the Government of Canada’s historic infrastructure plan.  Collectively, local Mayors expressed the priorities and realities of delivering infrastructure projects to their communities.

Investing in Canada is a $180+ billion dollar infrastructure plan for the next twelve years. This plan looks at creating long-term economic growth, building inclusive communities, and supporting a low carbon and green economy. With a focus on achieving national objectives, while providing provinces, territories, and municipalities with the flexibility to meet their infrastructure needs.

“Today’s Roundtable with local Mayors was an excellent opportunity to discuss the impact of projects that have been completed since 2015 as well as to set priorities for our communities going forward. Local decision making is the driving force behind our plan. Working together is the way that we will build a future for our kids at home, here in Fundy Royal.”Alaina LockhartMember of Parliament for Fundy Royal

“Talking often with the municipal government leaders in New Brunswick Southwest, I hear about ageing infrastructure and the challenges this creates for attracting new businesses, residents and improving the general quality of life. Since forming government in 2015, we have listened to our community leaders and invested significantly in local infrastructure projects. I was proud to connect New Brunswick Southwest mayors and town managers with our federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities for an informal roundtable discussion on local priority projects.”Karen LudwigMember of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest
