National Skating Championships Kick Off in Saint John

Event will help fuel tourism in the region and create economic opportunities

January 14, 2019 – Saint John (NB) – Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Investing in tourism projects in both big cities and small communities throughout Atlantic Canada is essential to growing this important economic sector for Canadians. By investing in our tourism sector, we attract new visitors, grow businesses and create new ones, generating economic growth and good middle-class jobs.

From January 13 – 20, 2019, Saint John and Quispamsis will host the 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, to be held at Harbour Station, with the skaters practicing at the Quispamsis QPlex. This national event is expected to draw thousands of tourists to the city, and generate more than $2.5 million in economic spinoff benefits.

The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is supporting Discover Saint John as it works to promote this event, maximize economic opportunities, and offer an enhanced visitor experience.  ACOA is investing $25,000 towards costs for marketing activities related to hosting the championships.

This investment builds on commitments made by the Government of Canada and the four Atlantic Provinces to drive economic growth in the region through the Atlantic Growth Strategy by helping the region’s tourism industry attract more visitors and create new jobs. This bold new approach is in line with Canada’s Tourism Vision, which seeks to make Canada a top-ten global tourism destination by 2025.
